Shahzia Sikander studied miniature painting at the Lahore College of Arts, and her practice pushes the boundaries of this traditional form. Untitled (Baraat) is a subtle exploration of the values expressed in the baraat, the groom’s wedding procession in Pakistani and north Indian tradition. Read from left to right, the triptych depicts three scenes of the wedding celebration in sequence, beginning with the groom proceeding to the bride’s house and ending with the wedding party. Sikander provides views into the cheering crowds and the surrounding landscape with great precision. However, upon closer inspection, one sees small changes to Sikander’s characters: a female figure in one scene becomes a man in the next, and saris change colour across the triptych. The result is a sophisticated questioning of tradition that invites alternative, contemporary readings of time-honoured practices.
