In Untitled (OROXXO), Mexican artist Gabriel Orozco uses consumer goods to investigate the relationship between art and commercial production. He applies circular forms in red, blue, gold, and white to the empty packages of seventy-six products, including snacks, beverages, and cleaning supplies. The repackaging design was informed by Orozco’s ongoing interest in circular compositions and the visual language of circular forms he defined in his Samurai Tree Invariants series. The objects were displayed at kurimanzutto Gallery in Mexico City, in an exhibition that reconstructed an OXXO, a Mexican convenience store. Visitors could purchase Orozco’s works during the exhibition, just as if the products had been on the shelves at a neighbourhood OXXO.
