In the era where smartphones have made it easy to take photos of people or things, how can photography create social impact beyond personal observation or emotional expression? Join Documentary Photographer Xyza Cruz Bacani on a journey from the museum to the neighbourhood, and share your observations of the community groups through photography.

Xyza is proficient in capturing faces of communities, bringing the personal stories to a wider audience, and raising social awareness for marginalized groups through her artistic practice. Throughout the programme, Xyza will guide you through a series of exercises on documentary photography, discovering people around us that were often overlooked. You will walk into neighbourhoods, engage in conversations to learn about people’s lives through attentive listening and observation. You will discover the unique stories of ordinary people and let their voices be heard through photography. You will learn step by step, from conceptualization to development, from photo-shooting to creating a collection, to explore ways of community intervention and reflecting our roles in society through documentary photography.

Under the hustle and bustle of city life, we find ourselves boxed in tightly by sky-scrappers and densely packed buildings. But are we as far from nature as we think? Join artist Lo Lai Lai, Natalie to discover nature in urban life and express your unique observations through multi-disciplinary creations.

As a ‘half-farmer-half-X’, artist Lo Lai Lai incorporates inspirations from farming into her works to share her insights and fascination with nature. During the programme, Lai Lai will guide you to leave your preconceptions towards nature and try to feel, observe and even predict its changes.. Starting with activities as usual as preparing meals together, observing plants and tree, and venturing into the countryside to explore various ways and forms in which nature exists in the city. By collaborating with other participants, you will document your thoughts and feelings towards nature and transform them into multi-disciplinary works such as moving images and writing, reflecting on the relationship between humans and nature.

Bacani has been recognised as one of Asia Society’s Asia 21 Young Leaders, Artpil’s 30 Under 30 Women Photographers, Forbes’s 30 Under 30 Asia, and BBC’s 100 Women of the World. Her artistic accomplishments are documented in a resolution passed by the Philippines House of Representatives in her honour, HR No. 1969. She has received multiple grants, including from the WMA Commission, the Open Society Moving Walls Foundation, and the Pulitzer Center, and was one of the Magnum Foundation Photography and Social Justice Fellows. She is also the author of We Are Like Air.
