‘Hong Kong as Mise-en-scène’ Screening and Artists’ Talk
See Hong Kong as you’ve never seen it before in a series of thought-provoking short films that capture the city’s complexities and different faces, and meet the artists in a post-screening talk!
Hong Kong as Mise-en-scène is an M+ video commission project aimed at showcasing the creative visions of local artists. Through an experimental and cinematic lens, the five short films by Dorothy Cheung, Etienne Leung, Lo Chun Yip, Lo Lai Lai Natalie, and Benny Woo offer a unique exploration of Hong Kong’s diverse landscapes and identities.
A term from film studies, mise-en-scène refers to the arrangement of visual elements within a frame, including everything in front of the camera—the set, props, lights, colours, actors, costumes—and how they relate or interact. Inspired by iconic images of Hong Kong that have appeared in countless films and have imprinted themselves in the minds of millions, these works adopt the concept of ‘mise-en-scène’ to leverage the narrative and documentative power of moving images. To place Hong Kong on a stage allows us to observe the city in the form of a cinematic setting, unfold its intricate textures and sensibilities, and expand its visual identity.
Join this free, drop-in screening of the five short films, followed by a post-screening talk with the artists to know about their creative process. The talk will be conducted in Cantonese with simultaneous interpretation in English.
