By the end of the 1960s, Lee emerged at the forefront of the progressive avant-garde in Japan and became the spokesperson for the Mono-ha (‘school of things’) movement with his landmark 1970 essay ‘In Search of Encounter’. With this singular practice encompassing painting, sculpture, installation, and many other mediums, marked by an immediately recognisable, impactful aesthetic developed over more than six decades, Lee is widely considered one of the most important living artists of our times.

Lee was the subject of the retrospective Lee Ufan: Marking Infinity at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York in 2011, and in 2014, he was the seventh artist to be invited for the prestigious annual Chateau de Versailles Commission. In 2021, the artist opened Lee Ufan Arles in southern France, a permanent site for his works. In 2022, the National Art Center, Tokyo presented a critically acclaimed survey exhibition for Lee.
