Kusama’s Vision of Life:
From Cell to Cosmos
Kusama’s Vision of Life:
From Cell to Cosmos
As a young artist, Yayoi Kusama’s interest in the natural world developed into a mystic understanding of the universe. How does Kusama’s art reflect her philosophy about the cycles of life?
Yayoi Kusama: 1945 to Now features the artist’s early drawings and sketches that depict different phases of a plant’s life. These works express her continual search to connect the cell to the cosmos and the individual to the celestial realm, moving between macroscopic and microscopic observations. The result is a diverse body of work that illustrates the power of regeneration and lays bare the mystery of life and death.
Hear from the exhibition co-curator, M+ Curator of Visual Art Isabella Tam, who will take you through Kusama’s lesser-known works on view at M+, some of which have never left Japan before.
