Wong Chi-chung is a veteran radio DJ, curator, and educator.  He plays an active role in promoting international and local music culture through various cross-cultural projects, such Ryuichi Sakamoto's async (2017) and Cantopop oral history for the Hong Kong Heritage Museum (2021). Wong currently hosts the radio show Chi Chung’s Choice on CR2 FM 90.3 and is a Curator-In-Residence at Hong Kong Design Institute. Wong maintained a close friendship with his musical idol, Ryuichi Sakamoto, since the 1990s through a radio DJ show and various encounters.

Having known Sakamoto for over 30 years, their connection began with the very first record in Wong’s collection—the Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983) soundtrack. The unique sound quality of vinyl records and the rich cultural value behind this format have inspired him to continuously expand his collection. Through his treasured vinyl records, Wong will share stories about his friendship with Sakamoto.

Alan Kwan is an internationally acclaimed jazz guitarist and composer known for his virtuosic musicality and innovative compositions. His work extends beyond jazz, having composed music for feature films and visual art exhibitions, showcasing his versatility as an artist. Leading the band Invisible Architecture, their debut album Between Now and Never won the prestigious Golden Melody Award for Best Instrumental Album Producer in 2021. His first album, Petrichor, also received multiple Golden Melody Award nominations, further solidifying his status in the music industry.

Alan is skilled at merging elements, such as electronic music and ambient sounds, in his works. He is always actively exploring new possibilities in appreciating jazz. Ryuichi Sakamoto’s film scores are one of his major sources of inspiration. Alan will share stories of his relationship with Sakamoto’s works and the profound impact they have had on his creative journey.

This session will collaborate with M+ Young People Programme to invite young audiences to share their stories related to the works of Ryuichi Sakamoto on the M+ Youth Instagram account. Hong Kong-based crate-digger DJ Kate Woon unearths diverse global sounds, unconventional rhythms, and eclectic melodies from her vinyl library, with a keen focus on Asia. As the founder of Yisekai, she champions Asian talents and has performed live sets at venues like Twenty Alpha and Tai Kwun, as well as Asian Avant-Garde Film Festival: Encounter the Unexpected and Asian Avant-Garde Film Festival 2025: Time Will Tell at M+. While working professionally at Getty Images and subsequently Apple Music, Woon curated and programmed over 24,000 hours of audio-visual content for movies and immersive spaces of top brands across Asia. While her postgraduate research is in algorithmic and blockchain music, Woon is also deeply interested in analogue media such as vinyl.

Woon’s passion for experimental soundscapes led her to Sakamoto’s async (2017) and earlier solo works Thousands Knives (1979) and B2-Unit (1980). Sakamoto’s avant-garde approach—fusing new electronic technologies, glitchy textures, and off-beat rhythms with jazz, classical, techno-pop, and Asian influences—shaped his music journey and impacted modern music, establishing foundational elements for genres including early electro-funk, acid house, electro, techno, and IDM.
