As part of M+’s 5th anniversary celebrations, The Recycled Orchestra of Cateura will make its debut in Hong Kong.
The Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, directed by Argentinian environmental technician and musician Favio Chávez, is formed by children and young people from the communities near the Cateura landfill in Asunción, Paraguay. The instruments they use are crafted by local artisans using discarded materials from the landfill.
Visitors can encounter the orchestra during M+ at Night: Five With Us, as well as on Saturday and Sunday’s Making Music: A Concert by The Recycled Orchestra of Cateura at the Grand Stair (Saturday sessions are open for free registration exclusively to M+ ticket holders). For those interested in a more casual setting there will be a Sunday sunset Pop-up With The Recycled Orchestra performance at the Artist Square.
Furthermore, the anniversary programme includes screenings of the documentary Landfill Harmonic, which traces the orchestra’s remarkable journey from their genesis to their status as an international travelling orchestra, as well as the Creative Workshop: Make Your Own Recycled Instrument where participants of all ages are welcome to make their own instruments from upcycled materials.
