Research Centre Guidelines 研究中心守則
These guidelines provide a comprehensive overview of the M+ Research Centre services, including provisions for special weather conditions, user conduct expectations, and detailed instructions for accessing collections, obtaining copies, and reusing materials in other works.

Guidelines 守則
First-time users
Please register as a Research Centre user by making an appointment. All users must be sixteen years or older. An official document of identification and address is required for your first visit.
Returning users
Please make an appointment and present your Research Centre user card upon arrival.
Walk-in Visits
Walk-in visitors can only view on-display collections at the Research Centre.
- Fill out and submit the Visit Request form to make an appointment.
- Make sure to request all items in advance of your visit so that we can ensure they are available and prepare them for you at an appropriate workspace.
- There is a limit of 20 items per visit. Please note that our collections are not available for lending If you reserve a large collection, you may not be able to view everything in one day.
- You may request additional items at the circulation desk during your visit.
- Additional items viewing request for Collection Archives, Institutional Archive and Library Special Collection items is not applicable
- Reference Library items in closed stacks may be requested at 11:00, 12:00, and 15:00 and will be brought to you when ready.
- Place all coats, hats, umbrellas, and bags in the lockers provided.
- Remove any clothing and jewellery that may damage collection items.
- Writing is permitted with pencil only. Laptops are allowed.
- No food or drink can be brought into the centre, including bottled water, chewing gum, and lozenges.
- Do not bring tripods and large equipment into the Research Centre.
- Do not place any items on the floor.
- Keep your laptop, phone, and digital devices silent.
- Take all phone calls outside.
- No flash photography.
- Respect the privacy of other users.
- Follow all instructions given by members of our staff.

➔ Plan Your Visit
- You may only view one M+ Collection Archives item or five M+ Library Special Collection items at a time.
- The collections are not available for lending.
- View items in the designated area only.
- Ensure your hands are clean and dry before handling items and wear gloves when they are provided. No hand sanitizer or cream are applied before handling.
- Use book cushions, weights, and other tools as directed.
- Do not place books face down when they are open.
- Do not lean on or rest any objects on collection items.
- Do not mark or annotate items in any way—ask M+ staff for acid-free markers if necessary.
- Do not lick your fingers to separate pages.
- Maintain the order of documents within folders, and of folders within boxes.
- Return items to the circulation desk; do not pass items to other users.
- Multimedia booths are only available for users who are viewing digital collections.
- Do not take other collection items into the multimedia booths.
- Discuss your scanning needs with members of our staff.
- M+ Reference Library items may be scanned for private study only and consideration must be given to the item’s condition and copyright status.
- M+ Library Special Collection and M+ Collection Archives items may not be scanned but they can be photographed. Please read the ‘Photography’ section below.
- Any form of copying must comply with the Copyright Ordinance (Cap. 528) of the laws of the Hong Kong SAR.
- You may photograph collection items for private study only.
- When using your cameras and phones to photograph items, ensure that:
- the flash and sound are turned off;
- and cameras and phones do not touch collection items.
- Materials from the M+ Collection Archives and the M+ Library Special Collection are covered by the Copyright Ordinance (Cap. 528) and it is illegal to publish them online, including on social media, or in print without the express written consent of M+ and individual rights holders.
- It is the responsibility of the user to obtain the necessary permissions from copyright holders, which may include the creator and donor, or their estate. If you wish to use images of the collection items for any purposes other than private study, please discuss your needs with our staff. Fees may apply.
- For permission to publish materials from the M+ Collection Archives or the M+ Library Special Collection, contact [email protected].
- For permission to publish materials from the M+ Institutional Archive, contact [email protected].
- Security cameras are in operation in the centre for the safety of our collections, users, and staff.
- Research Centre staff are present to supervise and advise users in the safe handling of collection items—please be courteous and comply with all staff instructions.
- The interpretation of these rules by the Research Centre staff on duty is final.
- Users who are in serious or consistent breach of these rules or those who are disrespectful, aggressive, or behaving inappropriately will be required to leave the centre and their user card may be revoked.
