With the advancement of image editing technology, even beginners can easily adjust images using mobile apps. How did photographers manipulate images over a century ago, beyond the click of the shutter? Simon Wan, a photographer specialising in hand-developed film, will lead participants in discovering the secrets behind classic works, including post-processing techniques and the materials used in darkroom printing. We will revisit the golden age of film photography and explore how photographers from different eras extended their creative process through printing process in the darkroom.

American photographer Robert Frank once said that a photograph must contain the humanity of the moment as well as vision. Photographer Iris Sham will guide participants in exploring the stories and human qualities behind the works on view and the perspectives of the photographer. We can see how Japanese author Yukio Mishima, in the era of Anpo protests, collaborated with photographers to showcase his aesthetics, as well as his views on life and death. We can also learn about how photographer Liu Heung Shing’s lens redefined conventional perceptions of a closed-off China in the 1980s.

In the early days of photography, the medium was primarily used for documentary purposes. As technology evolved, photographers continuously experimented and innovated, leading to the diversification of subjects and styles in photography. Blues Wong, an experienced photographer and artist, will guide participants through the basic concepts and historical development of black and white photography, exploring how it evolved from an objective recording tool to a medium for expressing subjective perspectives and personal emotions.

French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson's concept of the ‘decisive moment’ in 1952 had a profound impact on documentary photography. The chosen moment captured by a photographer is distinctive and irreplicable. Fashion photographer lambiseverywhere will discuss the significance of the ‘decisive moment’ in street photography, as well as how photographers communicate with their subjects when capturing portraits and documentary works. lambiseverywhere will also share how these concepts have inspired his fashion photography practice.
