Fallen Angels & Shorts

‘Forget First, Remember Later’, a subchapter of ‘Hong Kong: The Establishing Shot’, explores Hong Kong's constantly evolving cityscape, driven by innovation, development, and reconstruction. The works in this subchapter document the personal and collective memory of the city’s disappearing spaces and their landscapes, reminding us of the emotionally charged environment that remains archetypal Hong Kong.

Fallen Angels

Wong Kar Wai | 1995 | DCP | Chinese & English subtitles | 99 min.

A hit man (Leon Lai) who wants out, experiences feelings for his contact (Michelle Reis) whom he has never met. She turns out to be just as obsessed with him. Later, he meets a hysteric (Karen Mok) claiming to be his old flame and crosses path with a mute (Takeshi Kaneshiro) who sneaks into shops and runs businesses after hours. He falls for a lovelorn girl (Charlie Yeung) who never stops talking. Cinematographer Christipher Doyle's hand-held camerawork captures the alienation and longing in the city, with its hypnotic neon glow and maze of streets, stalls, and shops, while crystallising the nightscape of Hong Kong in the 1990s.

M+ Cinema will be presenting a newly restored 4K version of this 1990s classic.
