Drawings, Umeda Stand, lamp 梅田立(燈具)繪圖

Umeda Stand features a knobbly hemispherical base that allows the cone-shaped lampshade to be easily rolled into different positions, creating various moods for the room Produced by the manufacturer Yamagiwa, the design received the 1986 Good Design Award in Japan.

Returning to Japan in 1980 after more than ten years in Italy, Umeda founded his own studio and continued to practice with a distinctly postmodern approach to design, inflected by his participation in the Memphis design collective. Exploring bright colours and synthetic materials in his expressive, sculptural work, he often imbues objects with symbolic associations alongside their practical uses.
