Lambert Yam and Ruby Yang Collection 任國光及楊紫燁藏品

Lambert Yam, a Hong Kong native and husband of Ruby Yang, co-founded the Phoenix Cine Club in 1973. Yam relocated to San Francisco in 1974 and obtained a degree in Filmmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute. He ventured into the film exhibition industry and assumed ownership of the World Theatre cinema. Additionally, Yam managed World Entertainment, which held the exclusive rights to distribute and exhibit Hong Kong films. He produced several of Yang's films, including A Moment in Time (2010).

Ruby Yang, a Hong Kong native and spouse of Lambert Yam, relocated to San Francisco in 1977 and graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute, majoring in Painting and Filmmaking. Yang has been actively involved in creating documentaries and feature films, including A Moment in Time (2010), a documentary about San Francisco's Chinatown through its theatres and moviegoers. From 2015 to 2019, she served as the head of the Hong Kong Documentary Initiative at The University of Hong Kong, with the goal of nurturing the next generation of documentary filmmakers in the area.

Lambert Yam and Ruby Yang Collection consists of thousands of objects in topics of Hong Kong and mainland movies, in forms of film posters, film stills, handbills, synopses, cinema architectural drawings, and betacam tapes. The Collection started during Yam ’s post at the World Theatre cinema between 1985 and 1996, in where lots of Cantonese and Mandarin movies, created or funded in Hong Kong, were screened. This Collection serves as a repository of the collective memories of people from Hong Kong and beyond, providing insight into the city's historical roots. In accordance with recommendations from the curatorial and research team at M+, the Collection is classified into various series based on genres. Within each genre, films are classified at the file level and arranged chronologically. The primary series in this archive include comedy, melodrama, Cantonese opera, Kung Fu, martial arts, fantasy, detective, horror, folktale, musical, crime and gangster, Chaozhou dialect, and more.

The Lambert Yam and Ruby Yang Collection was donated by Lambert Yam and Ruby Yang in 2018. M+ is committed to the preservation and to the arrangement and description of the Archive to the highest international standards. As sections of the archive are catalogued, they will be made available on the M+ Collections website. As an essential part of their Collection, films of some 200 Chinese movies of were received by Hong Kong Film Archive. That film collection was assured in an occasion in Oakland, California in 1999.
