Xue Zijiang framed the pale-coloured dinnerware and eggs against a white background. The subtle yet defining contrast of grey tones enhances the depth and texture of the objects. Taken during his residence in the countryside with limited equipment, this monochrome still life photograph demonstrates the photographer’s skill and sensitivity to lighting. Xue was known for his landscape photographs that record the beauty of China’s natural scenery in the 1940s and 1950s. He also excelled in portraits and still life photography.
