This catalogue documents the exhibition Selection, Tradition, Creation curated by the French designer Charlotte Perriand in Tokyo. The survey exhibition presented Japanese craft objects alongside designs by Perriand that adopted traditional Japanese materials and techniques. Japan’s Ministry of Trade and Industry invited her to advise on craft production for export to Western countries. On her travels throughout the country, Perriand became convinced that applying modern design approaches to Japanese craft held great potential. Her work and this exhibition had a lasting impact on Japanese design and on her own practice.
