In October 1988, with the support of Hong Kong art collector Alice King, the Institute of Art Tapestry Varbanov organised the New Direction in Contemporary Chinese Tapestry exhibition at Hong Kong Arts Centre. It featured pieces from the institute that were selected from the Lausanne International Tapestry Biennial as well as Song Huai–Kuei's work Butterfly–Composition in Rose (1983—1985), which was made after her return to Beijing and is now displayed in this gallery. It belongs to her iconic Butterfly series and features a more abstract form. The New Direction in Contemporary Chinese Tapestry exhibition was the institute's first large-scale group show outside mainland China, bringing contemporary tapestry with Chinese elements to a broader audience.
