This poster was part of the ‘Freedom or Communism’ propaganda campaign launched by the United States Information Service (USIS) in collaboration with the government of Thailand to counter the spread of communism from China to the rest of Asia. The USIS hired artist Payut Ngaokrachang to design a series of posters for the rural population. The ambition was to communicate the difference between life under communism and capitalism. On one side, communists confiscate farmers’ property and turn children against parents, while on the other the family lives happily, a picture of domestic bliss. Through specific projects and investments, the USIS bolstered Thai art and design production. Ngaokrachang went on to become a pioneer of Thai animation.
