This image belongs to Vivan Sundaram’s Re-take of Amrita series, a group of photomontages that combine archival portraits of Hungarian-Indian modernist painter Amrita Sher-Gil with those of her family members and her own artworks. Here, Amrita is shown reclining on a sofa with her sister Indira positioned to the right. Behind them is Amrita’s painting Two Girls from 1939. Sundaram’s photo composite merges real-life images with their painted likenesses to create a curious doubling effect.
