Family Drop-in:
I. M. Pei in Imagination Playground

This event is suitable for children aged 4 and above to participate with their parents. For safety reasons, children under 4 years old are not admitted. Each child must be accompanied by one or two adult(s).

Programme Assistants will distribute tokens at the entrance of the event 15 minutes before the start of each session. Admission is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Each session is 40 minutes. The first ten minutes will include a short lecture on the theme of I. M. Pei’s architectural design and an introduction to free play which is aimed at enhancing the collaborative experience between adults and children. Token-holders should arrive punctually to participate in the full experience. Participants arriving more than five minutes late may not be accommodated or may need to wait for the admission to the next session (if applicable).

This workshop is designed alongside the Special Exhibition I. M. Pei: Life Is Architecture and is a variation of the Family Day Drop-in: Imagination Playground. Children aged 4 and above can participate on-site with the company of adults to engage in a free play experience conceived by architect Kenrick Wong and his design team. The experience is inspired by the significant architectural works of I. M. Pei, allowing participants to interact with architecture from a different perspective.

The Miho Museum, designed by I. M. Pei and located in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, is built amidst mountains and forests, where visitors must pass through a curved tunnel to reach it. This unique approach to accessing the museum was inspired by the serene landscape depicted in the ancient Chinese poet Tao Yuanming's work, The Peach Blossom Spring.

Led by M+ Educators, participants can use large modules of different shapes to respond to I. M. Pei's architectural ideas and create different forms of tunnels. We encourage participants to collaborate with other families, carrying forward Pei's innovative spirit and using architecture and design to bring imagination to life.

About the Architect

Kenrick Wong graduated from the University of Hong Kong's School of Architecture and has been inspired by the works of I. M. Pei since he was a student. He incorporates the consideration of interpersonal interactions into spatial design, exploring how architecture can bring communities together. In recent years, he and his design team at maison V and Orient Occident Atelier have been actively engaged in various community building and design projects, both locally and internationally. They combine the concept of sustainable development with cultural heritage and multimedia technology, injecting vitality into different cities and rural areas in China, Cambodia, Japan, the United Kingdom, and beyond.
