Upcycle and redesign your old clothes into a fashionable and unique woven bag, whilst simultaneously bringing a positive impact to the environment through fashion.

What do you think it takes to be a Fashionista? Is it following the latest trends or leading an unusual lifestyle in society? In 1980s Beijing, when everyone wore suits in a single colour, Song Huai-Kuei, also known as Madame Song, introduced vibrant fashion culture to China. Today sustainable fashion advocates that we change the way we consume and produce clothing, to reduce the negative impact of fashion on the planet. Starting from the little things around us, such as joining this workshop and creating our own fashion item whilst developing a sustainable lifestyle through upcycling, everyone can become a fashionista and have an influence on society and the environment.

Taking the impact Madame Song had on society as a starting point, Kelvin Wan, alumni designer of charity Redress’s sustainable design competition, will introduce the concept of sustainable fashion by leading a making workshop. Participants will exchange old clothes using simple handcraft techniques, including cutting, reassembling, and weaving, to make a woven bag with vibrant colours. This will not only add an extra flair to their outfit, but also encourage participants to reduce fashion waste and apply the concept of sustainable fashion to their daily lives by consciously thinking about the environmental impact of their fashion choices when purchasing.
