M+ and Centre Pompidou establish a multi-year strategic partnership, comprising co-curated exhibitions and research

  • M+ and Centre Pompidou will enter into a multi-year strategic partnership across four areas: joint curatorial research, exhibition development and sharing, co-commissions and artwork displays, and collection exchange
  • M+ and Centre Pompidou will co-curate a major exhibition to be presented at both venues. Continuing Centre Pompidou’s history of international cultural exchanges in Asia, M+ will be another major institutional partner to build a new kind of relationship between two collecting museums
  • A series of jointly developed exhibitions will be staged at M+ from 2027 onwards, featuring works from the Centre Pompidou collection and the M+ Collections

M+, Asia’s global museum of contemporary visual culture in the West Kowloon Cultural District (WestK) in Hong Kong, is announcing a new multi-year strategic partnership between M+ and Centre Pompidou. Building on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2024, this partnership formalises a broad framework across four key areas: joint curatorial research, exhibition development and sharing, co-commissions and artwork displays, and collection exchange. The collaboration is a landmark partnership between a national cultural institution in France and the first global museum of contemporary visual culture in Asia, designed to generate sustained impact on an international level. The new MoU for this multi-year strategic partnership was signed by Suhanya Raffel, Museum Director, M+, and Laurent Le Bon, President, Centre Pompidou, at M+ today. Unprecedented in scale and depth for M+, this partnership is driven by collaborative research and joint curatorship, playing a pivotal role in strengthening cultural exchange between Asia and Europe.

Suhanya Raffel, Museum Director, M+, says, ‘Our strategic partnership with Centre Pompidou marks a significant milestone in M+’s commitment to advancing long-term, research-led collaborations on a global scale. As a museum rooted in Asia, M+ is dedicated to enriching scholarly discourse and transnational curatorial exchange, reinforcing our role as a major platform for sustained institutional exchange. Through shared knowledge, the co-curated exhibitions will be developed in close dialogue with Centre Pompidou’s distinguished curatorial team and research programme. This partnership strengthens the cultural dialogue between Asia and Europe and supports the development of new narratives about the interconnected histories and contemporary realities of global visual culture.’

Laurent Le Bon, President, Centre Pompidou, says, ‘With the renovation of our Paris building Centre Pompidou has begun a true metamorphosis, where international partnerships play a key role in helping to reach new audiences, enrich our collection, and advance curatorial research. We are proud to announce this ambitious collaboration with M+, which will benefit both the Asian and European publics, particularly young people, through programmes on both continents, all while advancing intercultural dialogue for years to come.’

Highlights of the MoU include:

  • A major exhibition jointly organised and presented at both institutions

M+ and Centre Pompidou will co-curate a landmark exhibition to be presented at both institutions, foregrounding the diversity and richness of visual culture in France and Greater China, and the new dialogues they create in a rapidly changing world. Featuring works from both collections, the exhibition will be inaugurated at Centre Pompidou after its reopening, with an M+ presentation to follow.

  • Exhibitions at M+

M+ and Centre Pompidou will co-organise a series of exhibitions at M+ starting in 2027. Grounded in four years of collaborative research, the programme will unfold in stages, beginning with a presentation at the Focus Gallery in 2027, followed by a major exhibition from Centre Pompidou co-organised with M+, and a research-based exhibition at the Cissy Pui-Lai Pao and Shinichiro Watari Galleries in 2028.

  • Joint curatorial research

M+ and Centre Pompidou will launch joint research initiatives to foster deep dialogue and exchange among curators, researchers, and museum professionals. These collaborations will enable research-led curatorial approaches and projects that reflect shared inquiry and contemporary artistic discourse.

The partnership is further strengthened by a four-year postdoctoral fellowship funded by the Huo Family Foundation, marking the foundation’s first grant to M+ and its first fellowship in the arts. Based within M+’s curatorial department, the Huo Research Fellow will contribute to the research and writing of exhibitions developed through this collaboration with a focus on twentieth- and twenty-first-century Western and Asian art.

  • Co-commissions and collection exchange

The partnership will co-commission moving image works for display on the M+ Facade and the rooftop Belvedere of Centre Pompidou Francilien – fabrique de l’art in Massy, France, from 2027 onwards, expanding innovative platforms for artistic expression in the public realm. Simultaneously, the collaboration will support mutual artwork loans and coordinated displays, fostering deeper collection-based research while increasing public access to works from both institutions.

Through this multi-year partnership, M+ and Centre Pompidou will build lasting frameworks for international exchange and deeper regional engagement. By supporting sustained, research-led curatorship and cross-institutional knowledge sharing, these efforts will promote wider access to the collections, exhibitions, and artistic vision of both institutions.

Notes to editor

The new strategic partnership between M+ and Centre Pompidou underscored West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA)’s commitment to global cultural connectivity through establishing long-term partnerships and collaboration. In line with deepening WKCDA’s ‘bringing in’ and ‘going global’ strategies, the partnership between M+ and Centre Pompidou will present high-quality arts, cultural, and creative projects in Hong Kong, Paris/France and on the global stage. The future collaboration in joint curatorial research, co-commissions, and collection exchanges will also deepen M+’s ties with leading international cultural institutions, strengthening Hong Kong’s position as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange.
