M+, Asia’s global museum of contemporary visual culture in the West Kowloon Cultural District (WestK) in Hong Kong, presents its new commission for the M+ Facade, Winds of Hong Kong (2026) by internationally acclaimed Turkish-American artist Refik Anadol. The work draws on wind and environmental data gathered from publicly available sources in Hong Kong and transforms one of the world’s largest media screens into an evolving ‘data painting’. Supported by Presenting Sponsor Julius Baer, a leading Swiss wealth management group, Winds of Hong Kong will be shown on the M+ Facade every night from Wednesday, 14 October 2026 to Thursday, 7 January 2027.

Winds of Hong Kong is the latest work in Anadol’s Winds of . . . series (2017–ongoing), which approaches data as a dynamic artistic material beyond numbers and measurements. This mesmerising work traces the seasonal rhythms of weather and monsoon winds across Hong Kong. Through the resulting patterns, it reveals the evolving relationship between natural phenomena and the built environment, as well as the role technology plays in contemporary society.

Additionally, Winds of Hong Kong echoes growing public debate about the environmental impacts of advanced technologies, including the energy demands associated with generative AI. At a time when extreme temperatures and changing weather patterns increasingly affect everyday life, Anadol’s work offers a different way for us to engage with environmental data. It invites viewers to consider how machine intelligence, when guided by artistic intention, brings to light information that exceeds the capabilities of human vision.

About Refik Anadol

Refik Anadol (Turkish-American, born 1985) is a media artist and pioneer in the aesthetics of data and machine intelligence. He is the director and co-founder of Refik Anadol Studio (established 2014, United States). The studio brings together a diverse team of designers, architects, data scientists, and researchers to create immersive, visually dynamic installations using machine learning to process large datasets.

Anadol approaches data not simply as information but as an artistic material for exploring the changing relationships between technology, culture, and the natural world. His work has been presented at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Bilbao (2025); Serpentine North Gallery, London (2024); 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa (2023–2024); and The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2022–2023). In 2026, Anadol co-founded Dataland in Los Angeles, the world’s first museum dedicated to AI arts.

About the M+ Facade commissions

The M+ Facade is an expansive, light-powered canvas featuring thousands of LEDs on the south face of the museum. Overlooking Victoria Harbour, it is one of the largest media screens in the world. The Facade showcases works from the M+ Collections, moving image commissions, offering moments of play, humour, poetry, intellectual reflection, and artistic contemplation to thousands of onlookers each evening.

Throughout the year, M+ collaborates with leading artists from all over the world, commissioning works that champion new moving image practices and deepen the museum’s connection with an international audience.
