Greg Girard:
Hong Kong Made Me
With special guests Gong Gong Gong
In this one-off live event, Canadian photographer Greg Girard transforms a new collection of his photography works into a cinematic sequence, juxtaposed with clips from iconic 1980s Hong Kong films and archival materials from local film still photographers. This special presentation weaves together decisive moments that capture transformations of Hong Kong in the 1970s to 1990s, illustrating his deep commitment to documenting the city’s many facets and will be live scored by Gong Gong Gong, whose eclectic sound is equally evocative of the Golden Era of Hong Kong cinema.
The event will be followed by a conversation with Greg Girard, moderated by M+ CHANEL Lead Curator of Moving Image Silke Schmickl in English.

Greg Girard (b. 1955, Canada) is a world-renowned photographer, famous for his archival records of life in now-demolished Kowloon Walled City. Girard started his photography career back in the 1970s and spent more than three decades wandering in Asian metropolises including Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. His works have captured the social and physical transformation of these cities. His most notable works include Phantom Shanghai (2007) and City of Darkness Revisited (2014).
Gong Gong Gong (formed 2015, Beijing) is an experimental rock band consisting of guitarist and vocalist Tom Ng and bassist Joshua Frank. The band has captivated audiences worldwide with their eclectic sound filled by repetitive riffs and hypnotic rhythms. In 2019, Gong Gong Gong released their debut LP titled Phantom Rhythm which received critical acclaim and was recognized as one of the top 10 avant-rock albums of the year by The Wire.
