About the Programme
The M+ Restored Festival celebrates the achievements of M+’s landmark initiative to increase the visibility of Hong Kong’s rich cinematic heritage by presenting and leading the restoration of nine feature-length films. Supported by CHANEL and launched in 2023, the first phase of this project highlighted the creative experimentation and technical innovation of the Hong Kong New Wave. Since 2025, M+ has presented more than 130 screenings from the M+ Restored project, with world premieres at prestigious film festivals as well as presentations at numerous renowned film and cultural venues around the world.
This showcase of the nine feature-length films is accompanied by the pairing of three M+ Restored titles with contemporary Hong Kong films, where thematic resonances between films from different periods of creativity testify to the enduring and still-vibrant legacy of the Hong Kong New Wave. Through a series of celebratory screenings and conversations with filmmakers and special guests, this capstone programme pays tribute to the Hong Kong film industry and offers gratitude to the greater film community for their committed support and recognition of the lasting impact of Hong Kong cinema.
Two panel discussions—one about the specific challenges of film restoration and the other featuring industry experts on the exciting emergence of a new cultural and critical awareness of restored and revival cinemas—will provide a deeper and broader context to M+ Restored, situating the project within larger forces shaping film heritage today. Our widely popular film workshops also return to offer hands-on experiences of celluloid and projection, creating further opportunities to appreciate film heritage.
M+ Restored is supported by CHANEL, M+’s Major Partner.
