About the Programme
‘M+ Restored’ is a film restoration initiative dedicated to preserving nine Hong Kong films, with a focus on Hong Kong New Wave—a groundbreaking film movement that emerged in 1979. The programme also highlights key works by filmmakers who preceded and followed this chapter in the city’s cinematic history. The newly restored films will be released in phases as part of the M+ Restored programme. They will be accompanied by selected reference titles that offer deeper insight into the featured works.
Hong Kong New Wave marked a vibrant period of creativity and innovation. Films from that time broke away from mainstream styles, giving rise to a new generation of talented directors. Among them are Patrick Tam, Peter Yung, Ann Hui, Tsui Hark, Yim Ho, and Allen Fong, many of whom studied filmmaking abroad and gained extensive experience in television. Drawing inspiration from European art cinema, Hollywood classics, and American indie films, these directors brought fresh perspectives to the screen, leaving a lasting impact on Hong Kong’s film culture.
‘M+ Restored’ is supported by CHANEL, M+’s Major Partner.
