Super Mario Bros.
Thirty years before the animated adaptation The Super Mario Bros. Movie became number one at the global box office, Nintendo pursued a live-action adaptation of the iconic video game. Super Mario Bros. was a spectacular failure at the time of its release in 1993. Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo star as the titular plumber brothers, who must save Daisy and other abducted girls from the evil Koopa played by Denis Hopper. Marred by a difficult production and lack of connection to its source material, Super Mario Bros. was long disparaged as one of the ‘worst movies ever made.’ But yesteryear’s spoiled milk has turned into today’s gourmet cheese. After years of mockery, Super Mario Bros. has gained a cult following due to its unironic 1990s action sci-fi aesthetics and trailblazing efforts. This screening will give the audience a second chance to experience the kind of wacky gamble that is unlikely to happen in the risk-aversive corporate climate of today.
M+ Cinema will present a 4K restoration of this film.
About the Directors
Rocky Morton (b. 1955, United Kingdom) and Annabel Jankel (b. 1955, United Kingdom) specialised in making music videos for popular bands such as the Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club early in their career. They co-created the fictional cyberpunk character ‘Max Headroom’ for television in 1985. They directed the positively received D.O.A. (1988) before being tapped to helm the film adaptation of Super Mario Bros. The couple divorced in 2005. Jankel went on to direct Tell It to the Bees (2018), starring Anna Paquin.
