Even amid the bustle of the city, art and mindfulness can offer a quiet pause.
Mindfulness can be practiced in many forms, and the museum can become a meaningful space for quiet reflection and self-care. In celebration of Slow Art Day, an annual global event inviting visitors at museums and galleries around the world to slow down together, join us at M+ for an experience that combines mindfulness and art. Guided by M+ Educators, you will slow your pace within the museum—immersing yourself in the architecture, art, and the different forms of creative expression—to connect mind and body in an open and thoughtful way.
During this experience, you will:
- Ground yourself: Focus on your breath, bring awareness to your body, and gently return to the present moment.
- Walk mindfully through M+: Move through the museum and experience its shifting sense of space, texture, and sound to find your own ‘place of calm’.
- Slow look: Take time to deeply observe an artwork—noticing the details often overlooked and reflecting on how artists navigate change and express emotions through their works. Whether this is a group or individual exploration, find a space where you feel at ease.
- Create from within: Use different materials and textures to express your thoughts and emotions freely—an act of dialogue with yourself.
- Pick up ‘Coffee Bean Cards’ with grounding exercises (various versions available) from the ‘bad day self help cafe’ located at the Breakout Space at Sigg Galleries to take away your own mindfulness inspiration.
This event is suitable for people with all experience levels and with different abilities.
