Zao Wou-Ki’s Journey in Hong Kong
Join us at M+ for the opening talk of the Special Exhibition ‘Zao Wou-Ki: Master Printmaker’, and hear about how Hong Kong influenced the artist’s career.
How did Hong Kong shape Zao Wou-Ki’s journey as an artist?
Often referred to as a Chinese-French artist, Zao Wou-Ki has garnered global attention for his cross-cultural influence on the post-war art scenes of Europe, Asia, and the United States. While the exhibition Zao Wou-Ki: Master Printmaker highlights Zao’s artistic legacy in his printmaking practice, this talk will focus on his connections with the city.
Amid Zao’s artistic career between 1958 and 1965, he visited Hong Kong periodically. The impactful connections he made with this city were among the reasons that led to the making of this show, making the curatorial decision to present his work at M+ and in Hong Kong particularly meaningful.
The two curators of the exhibition, Dr Wu Mo, Sigg Curator, M+, and Yann Hendgen, Art Director, Zao Wou‑Ki Foundation, will be joined by art historian Dr. Ankeney Weitz in this conversation. Together they will share this lesser-explored facet of the artist, revealing how the city shaped his artistic journey and deepening our understanding of his significance as a master printmaker.
