Summer Edition Highlights

M+ Cinema presents a Summer Edition of iconic works, audience favourites, and playful encounters. Stair in the Dark—Big Leap Forward celebrates American actress Kirsten Dunst with three landmark films from her stellar career. Art at the Stair presents Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests (1963–1966) alongside his durational film Sleep (1963), inviting audiences to a late-night ‘slow cinema’ experience. To mark the fourth year of Stair in the Dark, Encore! Stair in the Dark Favourites brings back popular titles Trainspotting (1996), Twilight (2008), Belladonna of Sadness (1973), and American Psycho (2000) in the cinema house. Rediscoveries showcases two landmark films: Steven Spielberg’s Jaws (1975) and Martin Scorsese’s Raging Bull (1980). The fourth ASEAN Film Festival also returns this summer with a programmatic focus on the role of music and sound in Southeast Asian cinema through screenings, talks, and a listening session.

Details of the M+ Cinema Summer Edition:

Stair in the Dark continues to highlight filmmakers who take bold leaps into the unknown. The Summer Edition spotlights three watershed moments in Kirsten Dunst’s illustrious career: her early breakthrough with Interview with the Vampire (1994) by Neil Jordan, her defining role in Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides (1999), and her award-winning performance in Lars von Trier’s Melancholia (2011). Together, these works highlight Dunst’s enduring influence and her seamless shifts between genres and sensibilities.

  • Art at the Stair: Andy Warhol’s film portraits of famous figures

This season’s Art at the Stair presents Screen Tests (1963–1966) by leading American Pop artist Andy Warhol. Filmed using a static 16 mm camera, Screen Tests is a renowned series of silent, black-and-white close-ups of cultural celebrities. The works transform stillness and duration into compelling cinematic experiences, featuring filmed portraits of artists, poets, actors, and musicians, such as Salvador Dalí, Bob Dylan, Marcel Duchamp, and John Giorno. The series will be presented at the Grand Stair during museum opening hours.

  • Art at the Stair on Friday nights: A ‘slow cinema’ experience with Sleep by Andy Warhol

One of Andy Warhol’s first experiments in filmmaking, Sleep (1963) will be screened free of charge on six Friday nights from 7 August to 2 October. This hugely influential film captures over five hours of America poet John Giorno asleep, challenging conventional ideas of narrative, attention, and filmmaking. Audiences are welcome to bring pillows to rest alongside the film. This presentation coincides with the M+ exhibition Dial-A-Poem Hong Kong, featuring the latest international edition of Giorno’s groundbreaking work Dial-A-Poem, creating an immersive encounter with time, presence, and observation.

  • Encore! Stair in the Dark Favourites at M+ Cinema

Marking the fourth year of the Stair in the Dark series, M+ presents Encore! Stair in the Dark Favourites, bringing back four of the most beloved titles for special screenings at M+ Cinema: Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting (1996), Catherine Hardwicke’s Twilight (2008), Eiichi Yamamoto’s Belladonna of Sadness (1973), and Mary Harron’s American Psycho (2000). The programme offers a rare opportunity for audiences to revisit these iconic films on the big screen.

Rediscoveries will feature Steven Spielberg’s Jaws (1975), widely regarded as the film that established the modern summer blockbuster, and Martin Scorsese’s Raging Bull (1980), a powerful black-and-white exploration of violence and self-destruction. Together, these films examine primal and human instincts while reaffirming the enduring impact of cinema.

  • ASEAN Film Festival 2026

M+ Cinema is proud to co-present the fourth edition of the ASEAN Film Festival with the Hong Kong-ASEAN Foundation. This year’s programme focuses on the integral role of music and sound in shaping Southeast Asia’s most significant and emerging forms of cinema.

Programme highlights include Usmar Ismail’s Lewat Djam Malam (After the Curfew) (1954), a monument of Indonesian film history, and a diverse selection of restored classics and contemporary cinema in which song and music transcend atmosphere, evoke nostalgia and intimacy, and drive modern storytelling. The festival features a dedicated listening session with a guest music specialist who will guide audiences through the region’s acoustic evolution, tracing the history of Southeast Asian music in film across distinct chapters. The festival also spotlights short films by emerging Southeast Asian filmmakers, foregrounding new voices as they gain international recognition.

Rediscoveries is supported by CHANEL, M+’s Major Partner. For more ticketing and programme information, please visit the M+ website.
